What Should I Expect When Ordering?
A practical guide for your first home kitchen order.
Think “small local food business,” not “mini restaurant.” Simpler, more personal, and more limited by design.
Before you order
Check what is on offer and on which days.
Note how far ahead you need to order.
Confirm whether the cook offers pickup, dining at their home, or delivery.
Read ingredient and allergen information. If it matters to your health, ask the cook directly before ordering.
Note how the cook wants you to order and pay.
Placing the order
Follow the cook’s process. There is no front desk or staff. Say clearly what you want, when you want it, and how you will receive it.
Special requests and substitutions
The cook works from a menu the County has approved. Adding a dish or changing how it is made can require County sign-off, so not every request is possible. Ask before ordering and let the cook decide.
Picking up or dining in
Arrive at the agreed time. You are at someone’s home: follow parking instructions, respect neighbors, and stay in the areas the cook has set aside for customers.
After the meal
Liked it? Order again and tell people — that is how a home kitchen grows. Something wrong? Tell the cook promptly and clearly. Suspected foodborne illness or a serious safety concern? Report it to the County (see Are Home Kitchens Inspected? How to Check).
First-order checklist
I know what I am ordering.
I know when and how I will receive it.
I have asked my ingredient or allergy questions.
I know this is a small, home-based business.
I know how to reach the cook if plans change.
The goal is a clear, respectful exchange between a local cook and a local customer.
