Something the guides did not answer? Ask. We read every message.

Your question helps two people: you, and the next person who has the same question. If enough people ask the same thing, it becomes a page.

What to ask

Anything about starting or running a home kitchen in San Diego County:

  • Whether you qualify
  • The permit process, the SOP, the inspection
  • Menu questions — is this dish allowed?
  • Costs, taxes, city licenses
  • Running the business: pricing, customers, bookkeeping
  • The directory: how to claim or fix your listing
  • Something you think we got wrong

If you are a customer looking for a certain kind of food or a cook in your area, tell us that too.

What we will do

  • Answer what the County’s documents and the State’s rules actually say.
  • Point you to the right page, or the right government office, when the answer is not ours to give.
  • Say “we don’t know” when we don’t, and go find out.

What we cannot do

We are not the County, the State, a lawyer, or a tax adviser. We cannot approve your menu, tell you your application will pass, or tell you what your taxes will be. For those:

  • Permit and menu questions: DEHQ, (858) 505-6900, FHDMEHKO@sdcounty.ca.gov
  • Sales tax: CDTFA, (800) 400-7115
  • Your personal taxes: a tax professional

The form

  • Your question (required)
  • Email (optional — only if you want a reply; we do not add you to any list)
  • Are you (optional): thinking about starting · applying now · already permitted · a customer · other

Do not include your Social Security number, ID documents, bank or card details, or medical information. We do not need them and we do not want them.

Two quick questions, if you have thirty seconds

We ask everyone these; answers are anonymous and shape what we write next.

  • What is your biggest concern about starting? permit · inspection · cost · taxes · finding customers · delivery · landlord or HOA · time · other
  • If you used our guide: where are you now? got permitted · applying · still deciding · decided against it

What happens to your question

We read it. If it changes a page, we fix the page. If we quote a question as an example, we strip anything that could identify you. Your question goes straight to our mailbox; no outside form service sees it. We keep the question text; once we’ve replied, we delete your email address. Nothing is shared with anyone.
